Amplify: White House Establishes First-Ever Initiative on Women’s Health Research
President Biden recently announced the first-ever initiative on Women’s Health Research, which seeks to “fundamentally change how we approach and fund women’s health research, and pioneer the next generation of discoveries in women’s health”. The Initiative will be led by the Office of the First Lady and the White House Gender Policy Council. Dr. Carolyn Mazure, of Yale School of Medicine, will serve as the Chair and coordinate the Initiative.
On the Initiative, First Lady Jill Biden said: “Research on women’s health has been underfunded for decades, and many conditions that mostly or only affect women, or affect women differently, have received little to no attention. These gaps are even greater for communities that have historically been excluded from research – including women of color and women with disabilities. We have a clear goal: to fundamentally change how we approach and fund women’s health research.”
Highlights:
Members of the Initiative will have 45 days to provide recommendations to the Administration on how to improve women's health research, including to address health disparities and inequities.
“The Initiative will explore new public-private partnerships and engage private and philanthropic leaders to drive innovation and ensure the combined power of public, private, and philanthropic sectors advances research on women’s health.”
“Initiative members will set priority areas of focus where additional investments could be transformative—in areas of research ranging from heart attacks in women to menopause.”
