Amplify: President Biden’s Cancellation of Student Loans for 78,000 Public Service Workers
On March 21, 2024, President Biden canceled student loans totaling nearly $6 billion for an additional 78,000 public service workers through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. These workers include teachers, nurses, firefighters, and other federal, state, local and tribal employees.
This step is in addition to previous actions by the Biden Administration canceling student debt for over 870,000 public service workers.
Highlights
The Biden Administration has made significant changes to the PSLF program, which previously saw 99% of applicants rejected for loan forgiveness. Before President Biden, only about 7,000 public service workers had ever received student loan forgiveness.
The Biden Administration has already canceled student debt for nearly 4 million Americans through various debt relief actions.
Other student debt relief accomplishments of the Biden Administration include the largest Pell Grant increases in ten years and developing the SAVE plan (go to www.studentaid.gov to apply) which will lower student loan payments and provide loan forgiveness.
President Biden continues to pursue additional approaches to student debt relief.
