Amplify: Biden Administration’s Clean Water Leadership

President Biden recently announced the Administration’s $3 billion commitment to replace toxic lead pipes in communities across the country within 10 years. The goal of this EPA-administered program is to reduce or eliminate the risk of exposure to lead in drinking water. This is the largest investment in clean and safe drinking water in the history of our nation and it builds on over $20 billion in water infrastructure investments made through the President’s American Rescue Plan.

Highlights—Biden’s Accomplishments:

  • Water delivered through lead containing pipes impacts over 9 million homes and businesses (including schools). The Administration’s funding will replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes nationwide.

  • There is no safe level of lead exposure. Lead is a neurotoxin that can cause irreversible brain damage in children as well as kidney damage and other disorders.

  • Lead poisoning disproportionately impacts communities of color and poor communities. The EPA and Department of Labor are working with these communities to secure the necessary funding to ensure replacement of lead pipes.

  • The lead replacement program will send money to every state and territory and will create many good-paying and union jobs, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

  • The EPA estimates that 200,000 jobs have been created as a result of water infrastructure improvements under the Biden Administration.

  • HUD is also committing $90 million to lower health hazards in public housing – dealing with things such as lead-based paint, carbon monoxide, mold, fire, radon and asbestos.
